Chapter 01 — Origin
Hitivi began as a working group inside a Stockholm-to-Tallinn video infrastructure team, convened by Maris Kask in the winter of 2017. The founding engineers had spent the previous decade carrying traffic for two of the most demanding real-time systems in Europe — Playtech's gaming back-end and Ericsson's media delivery layer — and they were watching the broadcast industry inherit the same telemetry problems they had already solved, twice, in adjacent verticals.
What they saw on the broadcaster side in 2018 was familiar: dashboards that updated hourly, attribution stitched together by hand, ad yield modelled in spreadsheets, and a procurement cycle that took longer to evaluate a vendor than to deploy one. Hitivi was incorporated in Tallinn in Q2 of that year with a deliberately narrow thesis — that video viewership is a measurable, optimisable signal, and that the broadcasters who treated it as such would compound an advantage their slower peers could not close.
The thesis held. By 2020, the company had its first six-figure ARR customer; by 2022 it had crossed the threshold of 100 enterprise deployments; and in October 2023 it closed a €28 million Series B led by Dawn Capital, with Atomico participating and all existing investors following on. The same year, the European Commission began citing Hitivi's annual State of Streaming Europe report in its digital media policy briefings.
Maris was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list in 2020. She remains CEO, still based in Tallinn, still accountable to a board that includes representation from Dawn Capital and Atomico.
